Artist Statement

My work does not exist to debunk previous stereotypes, but to offer alternative realities. I seek to make imagery that is time agnostic, affirming the possibility of their existence for a time where they would’ve offered more positive affirmation to their respective time period. My preoccupation with love – in all of its forms –  has led me to pursue the creation of my own cinematic universe using the medium of photography. I think of this universe as a series of Black memory landscapes or geographies, in which I can map themes of intimacy through familial relationships, romantic relationships, and friendships between Black people. These landscapes of Blackness also must acknowledge the folklore and magic that lives within the memories of others and archives created before my practice. I therefore synthesize both archival and contemporary imagery, to further dissolve arbitrary barriers, to create discussions surrounding the lineage of Black people being observed and depicted.
